About Dr. Smith

Profile

Dr. J. Scott Smith has been the choral Director at Central Middle School since 2011. Prior to his appointment at Central Middle School, Dr. Smith was the music specialist, choral director and orchestra director at Roopville Elementary for 11 years. While at Central Middle School, the choirs under his direction have consistently scored Superior and Excellent ratings at LGPE and at various southeast music festivals. Dr. Smith initiated and organized the Carroll County Middle School Honor Chorus and has included nationally recognized conductors such as Dr. Michelle Folta, Mr. Jay Champion, Dr. Karen Graffius, and Dr. Stefanie Cash. 

He has served several roles for GMEA, including District 7 elementary chair for 9 years, State Elementary Honor Chorus organizer for 3 years, 6th Grade State Honor Chorus organizer for 9 years, District 7 Middle School Honor Chorus organizer for 5 years, and currently serving as the District 7 GMEA Chorus Chair. Students under his direction have also participated in GMEA Middle School All-State Honor Chorus.

Outside of the chorus room, Dr. Smith has served on the bias review committee for the ETS for the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators of Music (P-12). He has been an adjunct professor at West Georgia Technical College since 2018. Dr. Smith currently serves as the minister of music at Bethesda Baptist Church.

He earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Education from Boston University and both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education from Jacksonville State University. He resides in Bowdon, with his wife Jessie, and their 4 children Samantha, Aaron, Benjamin, and Mikayla.
